If you've lived in Mount Airy for more than a couple of summers, you already know the rhythm: Oktoberfest closes out September, the farmers market runs through the warm months, and Main Street mostly minds its own business the rest of the week. That rhythm hasn't disappeared this year. But something underneath it changed, and it's the kind of change you'd only notice if you're the one driving past Watkins Park on a Wednesday and past 3 N. Main Street on a Monday, wondering why both nights suddenly have cars parked along the curb.
Here's the actual shift. Downtown Mount Airy used to run almost entirely on volunteer horsepower, specifically the Mount Airy Main Street Association, known locally as MAMSA. In 2023, MAMSA's own account of that year credits the group with running the Wednesday farmers market for 18 straight weeks from late May through September, alongside a full slate of its own signature events: the Chocolate Crawl, Wine and Cheese on Main, Boot Scootin' on Main, and the town's Oktoberfest. That's one association carrying the whole calendar.
By 2026, the town's own website describes the farmers market differently. It's now run under Town management, with a named staff position, Communications Specialist and Farmers Market Manager Gina Gallucci-White, overseeing a season that runs May 6 through September 23, Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. at Watkins Park. MAMSA still exists and still runs Oktoberfest, set this year for September 27, noon to 6 p.m., along Downtown Main Street. But the weekly market that used to be a MAMSA project is now a municipal one.
The Town-Managed Market And Monday Event
It would be easy to file that under bureaucratic housekeeping and move on. But it's worth naming alongside what's on the calendar for the rest of your week. The Town now manages the recurring, logistics-heavy farmers market, and the calendar also lists a weekly Monday food-truck event.
That event is "Mondays in Mount Airy," a weekly food truck event at 3 N. Main Street running 4 to 8 p.m., listed on the town's own community calendar as a recurring fixture rather than a one-off. The town calendar listed a Monday, August 31 date, following the August 29 Celebrate Mount Airy gathering on Downtown Main Street, another Town-listed community event that isn't tied to MAMSA's merchant calendar at all.

Main Street's Restaurant Lineup Is Changing Too
Main Street's businesses have been changing during the same season. The Bull Pen, a longtime fixture, changed hands recently enough that regulars are still noting it in reviews as "the first time since the new owners." Vintage, housed in a Main Street building dating to 1780, reopened under new management this year, leaning into elevated comfort food and cocktails in a space that's been serving the town in one form or another for generations. Newer names have joined the strip too, including Walker's on Main, whose name puts it literally on the street the calendar is built around, and Bolder food/drink, a newer addition open Tuesday through Thursday evenings at 17004 Frederick Road.
The changes are occurring during the same season. A weekly food truck night and a town-run farmers market both function as low-commitment reasons to be downtown on a random weeknight. A rotating cast of newer and refreshed restaurants gives those same nights somewhere to go after the trucks pack up or the market stalls close. This year, downtown has both town-run weeknight programming and a refreshed restaurant lineup.
The calendar now includes recurring weeknight events alongside the seasonal centerpiece.
The Wineries Aren't Competing, They're Extending
A few miles outside downtown, Elk Run Vineyards and Linganore Winecellars run their own separate calendars, and residents have long treated both as an unofficial extension of Mount Airy's social life rather than a separate destination. Elk Run has a Harry Potter Night scheduled for September 5, and Linganore Winecellars is running its Autumn Reggae Wine & Music Festival this fall. Neither event has anything to do with the Town's farmers market or MAMSA's Oktoberfest planning, and that's the point. Mount Airy residents don't need every good night out to originate on Main Street. The wineries fill the weekend gaps the same way the food truck Mondays and market Wednesdays fill the weeknight ones.
What This Actually Changes If You Already Live Here
None of this requires you to do anything differently. You were already going to walk to the farmers market or grab dinner near Main Street on a Wednesday. What's worth knowing is that the Town of Mount Airy manages the recurring farmers market and weekly food trucks, while MAMSA runs Oktoberfest. The calendar lists those Town-managed events alongside MAMSA's seasonal centerpiece.
